CA's Creature of the Week: THE NEWBORN

A collab with ~tschahri.

The "newborn" in this species is just a shell for it's spores to spread wider with, it's not a baby as we see it. As soon as it is born, it will start to spread the spores to the air. When they get inhaled by a human female, they start their journey in blood vessels towards the womb, where the new baby eventually begins to grow. The unborn pumpkin baby resembles human fetus, and so these creatures are likely to pass ultra sound checks - their gestation cycle however is only 6 months, so there will be quite an unpleasant surprise for the mother-to-be when it decides it's time to get some fresh air.

That is so utterly disturbing and yet profoundly interesting. I really like this idea, no matter how scary or gross it is. AH, evolution! Is this used in a story or anything you've created? Because this seems damn interesting.

Also, does the lady die when the creature is birthed? Or can she just get infected again?

Oh my, thanks for the comment! Imagine the new mother-to-be who enthusiastically awaits for her baby to be born, and her face when this one comes into the world instead.

It is possible for the lady to die, because of the pumpkin baby's short gestation cycle and the hastiness the newborn rushes out of the womb with, but if she manages to survive, she might indeed get infected again if she inhales the spores. Now, how unlucky is that? It's also a possibility to inhale the spores without noticing it at all, as they get carried around by the wind very easily.

Also, no, this is not created for a story but for a weekly activity in ConceptArt.org forums. Me and ~tschahri have decided to join in every week, if possible, to get more practise.

It's just so beautifully done, every detail. *_*

IT'S WORSE THAN RAPE AHHH

Can young girls get infected as well..?! A virgin giving birth must be the worst.

That said, well done with the biology of the creature and the lovely gross details, I love it's eyepits and the texture of its skin aaand the prettiest translucent body.

Does the creature itself die after spreading the pores?
:iconkojotei:
WORSE INDEED! No-one's to blame!

In your body, the spores of the pumpkin baby can wait for the right moment a long time, years even. They travel throught your blood circulation system long enough to actually detect when the womb is starting to show signs of pregnancy. At that moment the pumpkin baby replaces the real embryo.
In any case, it can tell when the substratum is in it's most fertile state. Sometimes mistakes happen and virgins seem to get pregnant by themselve

The creature will survive in the outside world for a couple of minutes, if no-one kills it with a shovel first. Then, of course, the spores spread even wider.

Nice work, yet again! The creature really seems to glow of warmth inside the skin. Creepy. I like how the head has been shaped in the top piece with the cracks.

I was wondering how you in generally share the workload on these collaborations? For example, do you sketch out the concepts and ~tschahri colours them (or vice versa) - or do you give the pieces back and forth to each other?
:iconkojotei:
Thanks! We tend to brainstorm a bit together for starters, then the other (we take turns) makes a very rough digital sketch and the other continues. We toss the piece between us until it's called a day. It's great fun, because what you get back might be really different a work than what you just sent out.

Very cool.
